Malaysian Officials Decry Illegal Cyber Gambling in Sabah The Commissioner of Police in the East Malaysian state of Sabah, Datuk Mangsor Ismail, has called for a revocation of all gift machines licenses, saying that they promote illegal cyber gambling. Mansgor said that he would ask
the Housing and Local Government Ministry to revoke all current
gift machine licenses, and to stop issuing new ones. He called
the licenses “unhealthy for the state.” He also called for a full- on operation to
investigate those who have run illegal cyber gambling businesses
on gift machine licenses. "We need to get to the bottom of this The gift machines licenses, technically, are permits to operate only machines that, when a customer inserts a coin, eject a small gift. However, the holders of such permits have been interpreting their mandates a bit too broadly, to include cyber gambling machines, for the tastes of Malaysian government officials. The Malaysian government has recently engaged in a fevered campaign to wipe out the flourishing cyber gambling industry. On Friday, a raid on three illegal cyber gambling centers in the Penampang district uncovered 44 cyber gambling machines, and resulted in the arrest of 31 involved persons. It is believed that the centers had been in operation for approximately one year prior to the raid.
